Okay, I'm a novice when it comes to blogging and maintaining a website and such, so what I consider clever might be run of the mill

I started getting some spam posts on a wordpress blog I have. I activated Akismet and it's catching them, but I wanted to try and stop the spam from even being received so it won't throw off my stat tracking or use up bandwidth. Since it was all going to a single post (for some reason, not sure why they weren't sending it to all of the posts), I just renamed the permalink to that one post. However, the spam is still going to the new URL. I just wanted to know if anyone knows what's going on? I wish I could understand the spamming mindset. Is it a really bored human (there are like a dozen new spam posts an hour)? If it's automated, how did it keep posting to the same article even though I changed the permalink? How did it pick this _one_ post on my low-traffic blog, and why does it keep posting even though I have nofollow and Akismet so it can't possibly be helping its incoming link count?

The URIs are picked from RSS feeds usually and it's done with "posting bots" (such as scriptech.net/search-engine-optimization/link-building-comment-poster-software/ ) and the morons who use these things think it's "marketing" or "SEO".


"permalinks" are only a "mask" to the actual URL done with Apache mod_rewrite or mod_alias so you never change the true location of the post.

I suppose you may need to find out some protection against the bots?

Ahh, thanks, I did not realize that. I think it's stopped, I haven't gotten any new spam (even caught by Akismet) since late last night.

It's spam days here on Thursday and Friday, about 36 hours of non-stop crap hitting the fan.

Maybe spambots have created a union where they only have to spam 8 hours a day or something. Oh well, I won't worry about it since Akismet catches most of it, and I can just subtract the number of spam posts to get a better estimate of actual traffic.
