I think it all depends on what you are doing. If you are a writer and want to bill yourself as a writer and make a name for yourself, then you may want to use your real name. This can also be done with a pseudonym as long as it sounds real. How many famous people or actors use their real name?
Me personally, I've been on the net for years, and I've never used my real name for anything. If you were to Google my real name you'd find my professional linked in profile, some of the charity/community work I do, etc, nothing net related. EVERYTHING I do online is under a different name.
When I get applicants that want to work for my company one of the first things I do is Google their name. You'd be amazed at what you can find out. I don't want future employers knowing my political views, or what kind of websites I run, etc. You have to separate your professional life from your personal life. So if your professional life IS the net, then go for it. If the net is something on the side, then think about a pseudonym.
