Do you register for reply notifications?

Hello people
Recently I had this question in my head that i would like to share with everyone...
I read many blogs and see many people replying to articles HOWEVER hardly any of them follow up when the article writer or someone else reacts to the reply they made....
This brings me to think that people either don't register to get notifications or simply don't care... that is VERY weird to me... isn't that the whole idea of blogging?!?!
What do you guys usually do? what are your thoughts on this?
Cheers to everyone!
Pete

Basically "they" don't care. The majority of them will be just linkdropping clowns doing "Data Entry Work" and calling themselves "SEO Executive".

I get notifications on every thread I've participated in or bookmark the really interesting ones, otherwise I wouldn't waste my time participating.
It should be about sharing information and the links seen as a little bonus (if they really matter that much to you)

Yeah, feared that would be the answer... What i don't understand is the thought proccess behind it, if you reply to people and get in to some sort of real interaction, isn't their a good chance that person would visit your blog?
weird..

Didn't you know?
The ONLY WAY (apparently) you can get people to see your pages is by your "home" page being "top in Google" for "you most impototant keywrods"!

Depends on the person. I know if anyone leaves a thoughtful comment on one of my posts I almost always click through to check out their site. If someone visits and leaves good comments regularly I typically subscribe to their blog, link to it, comment, etc. I always try to respond to people who leave comments for me.
With other blogs there are times I leave a reply and don't follow up. If the blog gets a lot of comments you get a lot of email so I don't always check the box. I will when I specifically want to carry on a conversation, but sometimes I'm fine leaving the one comment and moving on.

It is about setting up some kind of relationship with your readers. People have a lot of interests and had various of opinions to share but once they have drunk up what they need or shared what they know, not unless the blogger gets to the root of what makes their reader tick it would be difficult going from there. Nowadays, counters telling me how many checking out what I have to say are a real comfort

Cool, so i was feeling a bit bummed about this and it's great to know that some Bloggers are actually in it for the 'right' reasons
Cheers.

As a user and reader I usually do not subscribe for notifications, as I hate receiving the junk. Whether the certain discussion is interesting for me, I return back manually, with no need to be notified. The registration is very rare event for me.

well i usually get reply notification on forum threads but seriously dont try to have reply notifications by blogs as the number of comments on blogs are much more than on forum threads so it just increased by mail box and nothing else..

I get emailed notification for comments on my blogs and I reply, one way or another, to most of those.
I don't subscribe to threads on most forums - especially this one as too many people reply to everything, usually with something totally worthless as at best it's a repeat of an earlier reply. Sounds rude but it's sadly true.

I do it very rarely. Only if the site I visited and commented is out of the list of the sites I visit usually day to day and when the topic or news are really worthy. Sometimes it is about the forum threads.

After a few months now, i can say that about 20% of replies contribute to the original disscussion... it seems that as some of you have said - most replies are all about back links or getting your "post count" up and getting more forum rights.
I will focus on the 20% full part of the cup.
Thanks!

If you haven't already set up a spam fighting plugin. That usually catches most of the auto spam. The rest you have to sort out yourself. Sometimes it's obvious which comments are spam and sometimes the spam looks legit. Usually when a comment is little more than generic "you're great" it's probably spam.
Also set your blog so it new commenters or comments with links need to be approved.
Look for patterns in the comments. Sometimes you'll notice much is coming from the same IP or the same email address. You can block either.

Sometimes I see a really good blog post, and want to encourage the author by paying him a compliment, but do not have much to contribute. Then it can be an effort to write something more than, "You're great", so he'll know it is a real compliment rather than spam.

If you can add something to specific from the post so it's clear you read it then it becomes less generic. Use the author's name. Comment on something specific. Things like that show the comment isn't generic.

Yes, of course. I was getting a mental block on thinking that I should be contributing to the blog, in the sense of adding some knowledge.

Adding some knowledge would probably be ideal, but a thank you or similar is always nice. I should save some of the generic comments I get. If the comment could have equally applied to any post on any blog it's probably something to delete. Sometimes if a comment is a simple thank you, I'll leave the comment, but remove the link on the commenter's name.
