Ah but in many ways you can control "tomorrow", or at least be in control of your revenue tomorrow
By getting genuine links for the traffic they can send and treating SE ranking as a bonus, you "futureproof" your traffic and sales against search engine fluctuations and updates, so if Google closed up overnight it would merely be a blip in your revenue rather than a catastrophe.
Take the "engine" out of the equation and concentrate on optimising for SEARCH. SEARCH as a whole includes EVERYTHING. People browsing Facebook pages are searching for something, real people looking at "Twitter" posts are searching, people reading blogs and articles are searching for something and it might just be what you are offering.
By looking simply at links to boost your rankings to chase two or three words for ONE page you really are reducing your target market by a huge percentage.
