These are my favoutite tips.
1.) If you have more than one - interconnect those blogs to each other.
2.) write original content - don't copy paste content from other blogs.
3.) optimize your blog for speed - reduce loading time.
4.) optimize your blog for easy reading - improve navigation, add related posts section below each post etc.
5.) Use 'relevent' theme for your blog.

And....

Spamming forums and blogs is NOT promotion!

Especially when forums such as this one have gotten wise to such abuse and ensure that links from comments are blocked from search engine crawlers!

I have seen statistics of many websites. Most number of visitors to a website comes from search engine. And to rank in sear engine you have to increase numbers of do follow links. Choose high pr, relevant sites to get back a link to your site. Other than that, article and blog submission along with social bookmarking solve the purpose.
