There are lots of pinging sites in that thread chrishirst. Personally, I use pingler.
In that case it probably answers this question then.

There are three that I use - Pingler which allows up to 5 URL's daily, Pingoat which is unlimited, but can block certain URL's and Pingomatic that allows an unlimited amount of URL's.
Pinging in blogging unlike the ping when you chat online is an XML-RPC-based push mechanism, which by using a weblog will intimate the search engine servers of a recent update to the blog.

Pingomatic or Ping.fm are great sites for this, also look up RDP services on Google for a list for your Wordpress ping list in Settings --> Writing. Good luck
