If this is not the right place for this thread then please move it for me.

I've noticed that the trend now is for advertisers to pay ridiculously low prices for links on many low quality sites with too many outgoing links. The publisher earns revenue through the sheer number of links s/he sells. But what's in it for the advertiser whose link is lost amongst the sea of other links? They're not going to get any pagerank or clicks so why bother purchasing these cheap links at all? And don't search engines penalize link farms?

Isn't it better to purchase links at a higher price where you can be seen and increase your ranking? What do you think?

It's probably the laws of supply and demand - the market for paid links is becoming saturated and as a result competition increases, prices go down and quality becomes diluted.

It's better to purchase links that will increase your TRAFFIC. Other than that, you've got the right idea.

The ranking thing is just a bonus that cannot be accurately quantified or counted on. (PageRank theories aside, that is.)

And the PageRank part of advert helping your rank is vanishing.

It's hard to change the trend in a forum environment as the market is saturated with 10 links for $100 sites. That's why most of my links are now sold through sites which specialise in link sales where customers still value quality over quantity.
e.g. http://authoritydomains.com
http://www.textlinkbrokers.com

coathanger: you are aware that TLB is on the big G radar for selling text links.

http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/what-d...iss-last-week/

While they haven't come out and said that they're diluting anything they can detect from TLB, it would be easy enough for them to figure out who's selling links and who's buying and nail 'em all in a brute force sweep.

It's the same idea with people buying links for PR...it leaves a trail, and the more of a trail you leave, the more likely you are to get caught doing something you're not supposed to be doing.

If I were going to buy a link (which I don't...but hypothetically), I'd rather buy a high-traffic, low-PR link than a low-traffic, high-PR link. What people forget in the whole equation is that the basic premise of SEO is to draw traffic to a site, and if a link draws traffic, then the SEO becomes less of an issue.
