$.01 per link, link experiment

I'm selling links on a website: http://www.linkexperiment.com starting at $.01

I created the page today (may 15th). It's a bit of an experiment, hence the url. I wanted to see how much I could sell a link for on the site. The mainpage will contain a maximum of 100 links that are open to bidding. Links that have high bids will be placed at the top, lower bids at the bottom. When the page fills up to 100 links, as new links are added the lowest bid link will fall off the page.

All links are SEO friendly and all links will be permanently placed on the "links" section of the site and will also be SEO friendly. (If your link gets bumped off the main page, it will still remain on the links page).

Ok I think that's all. Anybody have any questions? Comments? World Views?

What are people's predictions for how much the last link will go for? How much do you think the page will make total?

If anybody wants to buy a link or has questions, you can post here, PM me, or email buy@linkexperiment.com

hmmm yes similar, i don't quite get it though? did that first slot pay $176 for a link? somehow i doubt that. Also at this rate he's going to have a lot of links on the homepage, it would be impossible to load? Maybe i just don't get it.

at any rate, the boys at digital point have been buying up links, they're up to $1 now.

I don't understand... why do people enter a higher bid? Wouldn't everyone benefit if no one made a higher bid, but just placed a matching bid?

the idea is they bid higher in order to keep the top slot longer. If everyone kept on bidding $.01 the page would fill up, and then people would keep getting their links knocked off. Like the first bunch of bids were at $.01, then there were a bunch at $.1, then the last bidder bumped it up to $1 and there haven't been any bids since, so he's at the top spot for about a day.

As the page gets more popular there will be higher bids, and higher bids will in turn cause the page to become more popular.

hmmm sir p, see the bid, but don't see a payment. If you send a paypal payment to buy@linkexperiment.com, I can put your link up. Thanks for the bid.

Ahh, I see - can I suggest you make the minimum bid equal to the lowest link? For example at this moment in time the lowest bid would be $0.01, but bidding that would mean you get put down near the bottom with people who have also bid $0.01 wheras in a few weeks time, when the 100th (bottom) link is worth $1.20(bearing in mind all bids below $1.20 would have been knocked off) then that will be the lowest bid but it would mean you would get put in 100th place if you bid that amount.
If that doesn't make sense, I apologise - I'm absolutely cream crackered! Tell me if you don't understand and I'll try and rephrase some of it..

you're right on mc,
I did that yesterday, sorry I forgot to post that I changed it. I realized it makes a lot more sense to do it that way. This way you don't have to buy the first link, and the site will have a lot more longevity.

Since the change, I've had a lot more link bids because the min bid is back down to $.01, so you're right about making the minimum bid the last link.

ps. love your avatar

haha, very well, send a paypal payment to buy@linkexperiment.com, if you're using a credit card send it to admin@linkexperiment.com.

PM me how many links you want, and the text/URL for each link, and I'll put it up as soon as I verify your payment, and receive your info, Thanks colbyt

Always my luck - I have a really good idea, only to find out I'm not the only one with that idea haha. You wouldn't beleive how many times things like that have happened and to what extent.
P.S. Thanks for the talkupation!

update: Site has been picked up by The Houston Chronicle
as of today

next up, working on some free php scripts in order to generate some more traffic for the site. Also, site is now indexed on google, msn, and ranked on Alexa(with a little pic). Not bad for a week and a half old site i'd say. Thanks to everyone who helped get this page started!

I'm giving away $50 to the webmaster that can send the most traffic to http://linkexperiment.com for details check out the thread I just posted http://www.webmaster-talk.com/miscellaneous-internet-marketing-discussion/53696-50-webmaster-can-send-me-most.html#post254278

contest starts today now, june 15th 5pm and lasts a week. Should generate some good traffic, current top link is $3 and minimum bid is still just a penny (although i wouldn't suggest buying the bottom link)
