First I'd like to point out that I am not a programmer by any means. I'm pretty solid with HTML/CSS and I know some Javascript and PHP includes that just help manage content. Just to show that I am somewhat capable
THIS is an exmple of a site I did everything including design, graphics, and HTML. If what I propose is far beyond my means, just let me know and I can possibly find someone that is.
That being said...Hi.
<shameless plug> I'm an admin over at
The Guild Wars.net which is a fansite for the upcoming game
GUILD WARS</shamless plug>
While we are patiently awaiting release, I was thinking of a few ways to spruce up the content of the site for our users. Considering the content of the game, I thought it might be fun to add an EMODE.com-style personality test where a user answers 20-30 seemingly random multiple choice questions, and is then given a matching character result from the game and a detailed, but somewhat comical personality synopsis that explains the result. One of the true challenges here is that there is 5 professions to choose from(warrior, monk, ranger, mage, necromancer) - but once a player reaches a certain level they can add a second profession to suppolement thier skills. So they are now a 'warrior/monk' or 'ranger/mage'. To add to that, a 'warrior/monk' has a different skill set than a 'monk/warrior' - and I would like to analyze their answers and produce a description that explains which they should choose first, then second, and why.
I realize that this would take quite a bit of planning and organization - which I am fully prepared to do. However, when it comes to actually programming such a beast I am at a loss. Now knowing the situation I'm in, I need to know the following...
1) Is this plausable for someone with my knowledge base ? ( it may not be as complicated as I think )
2) What programming language do you think would best suit this challenge? ( explanation would be nice )
3) Would I need to use a database ?
4) Do you suggest I just go get a book and figure it out for myself? If so, please answer #2 and I'll head over to BARES & NOBLE.
5)Any other tips are much appreciated, especially if some of you have done something like this before.
As usual, MANY THANKS just for looking.
