To the question: I wanna set up a counter service on my page were people can sign up. Does anyone here know about a good script for this? I hope there is one for free... Have already looked at Hotscripts and Scriptsearch....

Do you mean that you would like to offer counters? I think this is what you mean because if you have a site you probably know how to sign up for a free counter. Anyways to answer your question. no i havent seen one of those scripts. I know you could write one using poerl, php or asp but I am not sure if you know either of those languages. I am not sure where you could find a ready-made script like this but if you are really interested in this counter thing then you might want to learn one of the three languages I listed above. It will take a while until you can properly make a script like that but it might be worth it.

Last year I was planning to set up a remotely hosted scripts site and found this excellent counter service:
Freecounter

It's PHP/MySQL and lets you offer statistics etc. to your users. The only thing you need on your server is GD (I think) to do the image stuff.

Great script anyway. Unfortunately I never finished setting up the remotely hosted scripting site because my host said that it wasn't allowed. You should probably check with yours before doing this too.

Yes that would have been a great script, but I can`t find it on that page.... I have tried before too... Do you have a copy on your hd to share?

Hadn't noticed that.... what an awful site! Couldn't find it either.

I've put a copy on my site for you to download. I think thats all the files. You may find some bits are customized by me, so you'll need to change that.

A quick warning to anyone planning to offer a remotely hosted script of any kind, but particularly where visitors are expected to add code that uses your files.

I ran a banner exchange (small in size, but popular in the Petz niche) - now that I've stopped the banner exchange, I still have over 1Mb of unnecessary log calls a day using around 25Mb of bandwidth (not that I've got anything on the domain right now)... I'm currently trying to track down the owners and contact the hosts about the problem but this is a long an tedious process.

So think twice if you offer a free service on your site.

i developed those scripts and i took them down because they were buggy. i wouldn't use them, but you're a free man

ohhhhhh my bad, i was in a hurry so i read really fast, must have skipped the service part there.

just run a search through google or try this new search engine there... www.bufkah.7p.com
searches through 4 engines at a time, useful.
Run a search for counterservice on google, yahoo, DMOZ, lycos, and mamma...ull find good results i bet.

It shoudln't actually be too difficult to develop one if you have a bit of knowledge of PHP/MySQL. As I see it all you need for a basic counter is:

• A script which is called as an image. When called it increments the appropriate user's row in a database and using GD outputs a number
• A signup page gets information and adds a new row to the database
• An administration page is available to add/delete/edit counters

Of course, thats over-simplified, but I'm sure that with a bit of work it should be quite possible to develop (I've always found that developing proprietery scripts is much easier than ones for distribution, as you can take 'short cuts' with your code etc.)
