Dear Webmasters:

I have a large thumbnail gallery and I want visitors to be able to click on a link or button that says "Save this image" which would make the save dialogue come up. It would be equivalent to right-clicking on an image and then left-clicking on the "Save this image" option. Is there any way to do this in HTML, JavaScript, or cgi?

Thank you,
Leo Galleguillos

Welcome to the forums Jiskha.

Unfortunately, I've had to remove your duplicate post in the forum that was least relevant. I know you want as many people to see the question as possible, but this is best suited to "coding and scripts" as you are not actually creating and designing a graphic.

Please only post messages in the single most relevant forum, if it needs moved then a moderator with priveleges within that forum can move it. We need to keep the number of cross posts to a minimum... not only does it save you time (you don't need to check all the posts for a reply), but it isn't as annoying for those that read all the forums and see the same thing again and again.

I hope you understand why I deleted your other post... unfortunately, I'm unable to answer your question. I suspect it can be done in JavaScript, but I wouldn't have a clue where to start!

You might be able to send the image back to the users computer using cgi with an unknown header type which would cause the computer to pop up the "Save or Open" dialog box but even this isn't fool proof because for one thing you do know no if the user has a program that is set up to open these certain file extensions.
To show an example:
You could have a server-side language return the .jpg to the user as a .zzz file. but if the user has a program that uses the .zzz file then it might try to use that program to open the file.
Another problem is that by sending the user a .zzz file that is actually a .jpg when they get the Save As.. dialog they will only see .zzz in the pulldown menu underneath the Filename box.
I hope this helps a little.
