Is there a script (perhaps in java script) that would download a font automatically and install it so it would be effective on a website?

Not that I'm aware of. Besides, would you really want a site to be able to install something just because the webmaster thought it would be a good idea? Heck, those are called viruses.

There's something you can do like that with fonts but I understand it only works with IE on Windows, and most folks I know who've tried it have said to just make the font downloadable and let the user install it. Plus, you have to have the rights to distribute the font to have it "auto install" (or put the file on your site).

I agree with OtterBob...

I dont think there is a way..

And anyway if there was it would be illegal to install it on the users computer without their permission..

there are plenty of things that are downloaded to your computer w/ out permissions.

Java applets
Cookies
Images

all sorts of things

Anyways, fonts technically could never cause harm because they can't execute code.

These are downloaded because they are needed for the browser to process the page correctly...

And also the permissions for downloading these can be changed in Internet Explorer under 'Internet Options'

Whereas fonts are not needed for all sites...Only the site you want to use this on...And the user should have the option whether thay want to install the font of not...

Well, it only works in IE...

The solution is called WEFT3 by Microsoft:

Tried & works in IE6. havent tested other versions.

From the page:

"The Web Embedding Fonts Tool 'WEFT', lets Web authors create 'font objects' that are linked to their Web pages so that when an Internet Explorer user views the pages they'll see them displayed in the font style contained within the font object."
