Ive created a flash intro screen for a website ive made.

However, if someone has not got flash installed they cant get to the site - how can i make it so that people with flash see the intro and those that dont have all the relevant installs see a link which takes them straight to the site instead??

Thanks!

I'd suggest before you look into adding a Flash detection method you add a text or image HTML link saying 'SKIP INTRO >' in big letters, in-case anyone visiting the site can't spare 30 sec's to 1 minute of their life watching an animation

Colin Moock details two methods for testing for the exact Flash plugin version and redirects or displays alternate content.

Yea, i agree. Just put a 'Skip Intro' link under the animation. Which means the people with 56k don't have to wait hours if its a big file, people can skip it (people won't really want to see it EVERY time they visit) and it's a lot simpler than implementing lots of code to detect the users setup.

i agree add a skip intro link on the page.

Plus this link will also redirect googlebot and others to enter your site.If not there are stuck on your flash page.

cheers guys. im not 100% sure though what you mean by put a skip intro under the animation.

Ive already added a skip intro component but that doesnt show up as its part of the flash file - how do i insert it into the flash file so it shows up if no one has flash installed???

Hope that makes sense!

Hi woody22,

By placing it outside the Flash splash page animation in a plain HTML link ie. <a href="index2.html">Skip Intro</a>

Also as Omega_tux mentioned this will help the Search engines index the site faster (although Google can follow plain getURL("index2.html") actions within you SWF files.

Its also a good usability feature to add an option that user's can select to not view the splash page again - you could add a HTML form tick box (example 'Don't show this page again') and setting a cookie with Javascript.

how bout just getting rid of the intro altogether? flash intros have become a severely missused novelty these days that just serve to annoy most people. The fact that sites even have a "Skip Intro" just says to the viewer that the animation isn't important enough to sit through. save yourself some bandwidth and just drop it.

This is not the question you asked, but let me say a couple of things about Flash intros.

I have seen clients practically demand that flash intros be used. Usually these are clients who have never spent any real time on the internet and Flash did what Flash does -- it "Wow'ed" them and they just knew they had to have it.

A month goes by and the developer is getting a call to take it down. Why? Two reasons -- it gets very annoying very quickly. Second, customers don't want that. They want to be able to get on a site, find what they want, order it (if applicable) and finish as quickly as possible.

thanks people - got it all up and running now! I can see what you mean about flash intros and is there a need for one - the one ive done is very short so wont hold the user up too much!
