I recently got back from my holidays to discover whilst I'd been away that my site had gone down with no clear explanation as to why and for what reason. I contacted my host who has told me it was a 'DOS attack - denial of service, aimed at the website' which has overloaded the site with information until it has crashed. I have been told I will have to wait until my bandwidth quote is renewed which is not for a while yet, so until then my site will be down.

Does anybody know anything about these attacks, before this, I had never heard of them before, so I'd like to get a better idea about them. And does anybody have any idea about how I can stop these attacks from happening. I'm hoping this doesn't become a persistant problem. In any case, I'd like to get my website up as soon as I possibly can and make sure no attack of this sort can ever happen again.

All replies appreciated.

umm.. delete all email acounts tied to your domain. Recheck all your scripts and make sure they dont have any security holes in them. Check your server logs, dont really have much expertise in this section, thats all I can brainstorm

I had a small scale DOS attack on my website awhile back. Along with samson's advise, make sure you get rid of any unneeded FTP accounts and extra scripts that you don't need... And just hope that whoever it is leaves your site alone (thats what i did!) g/l man.
