I recently got back from my holidays to discover whilst I'd been away that my site had gone down with no clear explanation as to why and for what reason. I contacted my host who has told me it was a 'DOS attack - denial of service, aimed at the website' which has overloaded the site with information until it has crashed. I have been told I will have to wait until my bandwidth quote is renewed which is not for a while yet, so until then my site will be down.
Does anybody know anything about these attacks, before this, I had never heard of them before, so I'd like to get a better idea about them. And does anybody have any idea about how I can stop these attacks from happening. I'm hoping this doesn't become a persistant problem. In any case, I'd like to get my website up as soon as I possibly can and make sure no attack of this sort can ever happen again.
All replies appreciated.
