PDF sometimes does not load properly. Why?

I put a PDF up on a site for which I'm the webmaster. The PDF file loads OK on my own Win98 machine, under Adobe Acrobat 5.1 or 6, and on the XP machine of the person who created this file. But a few times, I've gone to this pdf (www.nkarten.com/p&r10-3.pdf) and the Acrobat reader has not loaded properly, altho I get that message "done" on the bottom left of my screen. This has happened a few times with both MSIE 6.0 and Firefox 092. It's not consistent, and it's definitely not a case of bad links. It's happened a week ago with another pdf that the site owner prepared, and then stopped giving me a problem just as quickly as it had started.

Anyone have any experience with this, or any guesses as to what might be going on? I have no clue at all. Tnx.

Hi notmadscientist,

I find that Acrobat doesn't load sometimes because there's an update available. Usually, when my PDF's aren't loading, I will find a "Do you want to update to the latest edition of Adobe?" message as I'm shutting down. I'm not sure if it's this is the same situation you're experiencing, and I don't even have a solution, but I hope I helped at least a teeny bit.

this is a problem with Acrobat or your Windows install in general. try un-installing Acrobat and installing it again.

My acrobat reader just starts to load and then completely freezes and shuts down. I have tried uninstalling, updating, putting in earlier versions etc. Nothing is working and it's making me mad because I have some PDF's I would REALLY like to read.

Does anyone have other suggestions for reading PDF's that work?

You might have already tried this, but save the file to your computer and open it manually without the browser. Acrobat works a lot better this way and it might fix your problem.

David.... it still freezes when trying to open it directly on my computer. It starts to load with that screen and then stops working and I have to ctrl+alt+del it to close. Such a pain.
