With an Apache server, a nice .htaccess file gives you the perfect little pop-up login/password protection you need. Unfortunately my University runs on IIS. Is there anything which would give me the same login/password protection ?

You can set up windows accounts for the different users, and enable Integrated Windows Authentication under directly security.
