We're trying SVN at work. I prefer TFS. A friend of mine is still using VSS.

So, what is your favorite SCS, what's it's TLA (three letter acronym ), and why do you like it?

SVN is okay, but you should really take a look at GIT (see http://git.or.cz/). It makes branching and merging effortless.

I'm just starting to use GIT with GitHub. I'm having to teach myself, which has been a little intimidating, but it'll be worth it in the end. Still haven't quite figured out how to do database models with source control, though.

I'm still on SVN because that's what I have to use for school and work, but I'm interested in some of the other emerging SCS available.

I think over Christmas break I'm going to learn to use GIT.

I used CSV at the beginning, and switched to SVN 5 years ago.
I looked upon the distributed control revision craze, but honestly, was not that much impressed.

Call me totalitarian, but I like to have a server that centralize everything, rather than spreading things around.
And as for branching, it never was a real issue before, and I never have used it in another way than creating a branch for a specific release.
I never had to merge back or make a branch evolve, so it never have been a burden.

John, I just wonder what TFS is. Might it be a Team Foundation Server ?

Git seems okay, but because I'm looking at integrating source control into my workflow, I think I might be switching to SVN because I can't find any IDE's with Git integrated, but Eclipse can do SVN. I'm looking at using Assembla for a remote repository. Has anyone used it or have something similar for SVN that they recommend?

Aptana just got SVN support integrated into it, if you prefer to develop with open-source technology. The platform has been improving a lot, and although it still needs some improvement IMO, it has some really fast and powerful concepts that it is connected with, such as its cloud-computing development network. I've been experimenting with it lately to build a new web application I'm creating as a side-project.

You know, I've been using eclipse for the last 8 years for my PHP development, and I've used subversion all that time...
Aptana, as far as I've understood it, is just a repackaging of Eclipse with some custom plugins...

Quote:
Based on Eclipse

Aptana Studio is based on Eclipse. That means you can plug it into Eclipse itself, or other Eclipse-based IDEs. You can also run a standalone edition of Aptana Studio which bundles in Eclipse 3.2, so that you can then extend Studio with other Aptana plug-ins or other plug-ins for Eclipse.

Cool, I didn't know that. I didn't know much about Eclipse, and I'm still learning about Aptana, but once I get better and more familiar with it, I am probably going to start using it full time, as it is so much better than what I am using now.

Little bit off topic but...

I've used Eclipse (with PDT), Aptana, and NetBeans 6.5.

In my opinion NetBeans is the best tool out there for PHP development because of its easy to use Debugger, excellent code completion, and amazing customisability.

back on topic, I've tried some other stuff now and I can definitely say that SVN is my favorite source control method.

I recommend SourceAnywhere Standalone. It can integrate with Eclipse, Visual Studio and many other IDEs well.
