I have recently finished a website which requires people to register to use it. They will receive an automatic email (after registering) that will tell them once they are approved they will receive a password which will enable them to use the site.

Example mail once they register:
Thank you for registering on downtownforjobs.co.uk.
Your registration now has to be approved. Once your registration has been approved you will be issued with a password via email.
Thank You

Some of these mails are blocked by users and others not. I know Aol and Hotmail block a lot of mail but I have tried successfully with two hotmail accounts.

I'm pretty sure this is a problem for a lot of people but wondered if there is anything you can do to help minimise it?

Thanks in advance.
Dan

Have you looked into reverse DNS issues?

I think I've heard that some sites are much more likely to mark a message as SPAM if the IP and name of the sending host don't match according to reverse DNS (even when the hostname matches the IP according the 'regular' DNS). And, this can be a problem if you have a server that hosts more than one site from the same IP address.

If possible (/allowable by your lawyers), I'd also try shortening, or removing the legal footer.

Ensuring that the authoritative nameserver has a rDNS lookup PTR record for the sender IP is sufficient. It doesn't have to match the sending hostname.

The first email which is plain text seems to get through no problem. The second one which is HTML seems to get blocked by the spam filters. Do you think if I change the second one to plain text it would make a difference?

While that sounds plausible, and you should try it, it would seem really weird that any mail host was generally marking HTML e-mails as spam.

So, try the non-HTML e-mail. If that goes through, take a look at your markup and see if there's anything weird there.

Just done that. The second plain text email now gets through and I've altered it to this...

The first email was actually HTML but I will change that to plain text.

I'm still having difficulty with this. Is there a particular email system that anyone can reccommend?

True. My new server I purchased and co-located in the datacenter was getting it's emails rejected because of the invalid reverse dns hostname it had.
