Hi im sorry if this is in the wrong place.
Basically im setting up a vehicle advertising and vehicle matching service and i have a few ideas i want to put in place on my site but i dont really have the know how. So i aplore your help or if anyone can

What im after is a database like a spreadsheet basically that i can update (add details too) from my end and they get submitted to a database that my sites users can browse through.

In the same sort of way as internet dating where you put in what kind of person you are i want people who are looking for vehicles to register with what kind of car they are looking for.
And i want those details to come up on the site in a form such as the users Area, Contact details, and details of the vehicle their looking for that sellers can browse to contact them.

I dont want to give too much away but im really looking for some help on this as its probably something simple to do or there may even be a free script which is perfect for me that i can edit/code into one of my sites pages.

A simple displayed text list view of the buyers details would be good on seperate lines and in alphabetical order for example.
ideally i want 4 different pages for north south east and west
i expect the list to get huge after a while so would need to be a pretty light application. i really wish i knew mysql

anyone know of any such thing?

You have a database housed on a server, in your hosting package - invariably an SQL database.

You make web pages which read the database using the PHP scripting language (which requires the least prior knowledge of programming out of the 3 main scripting languages).

You can find PHP for free easily all over the place, showing you quickly how to get sql data and access it from web pages in any way you want and write to it from web pages and update it from web pages.

You need to check your web host for sql. If you have not started hosting yet, consider hosting a whole server. A good website ought to aim to have billions of users, so you need a server. Plus by getting a server you can learn how to do server admin, which is worth 100s of pounds an hour salary anyway, if you have the right localized racial credentials for a job and can kiss things that you should kick.

Hope this starts you in motion. You will need the most important 2009 online tool for developers. It is this little box into which you type and magically it takes you to tonnes of relevant places. They call it "google.com" but I tell ya, it's John F Kennedy reincarnated, oh yes it is, make no mistake.

hmm thanks witness what you mention does seem a bit far from what i need hosting a server etc i just want to create this database thing for my website.
i need to get my site up but i dont want to do that until its ready.
something like this is all im looking to make but with a tool that does it for me.
can you make something like that with office like an xml spreadsheet that can be converted to html and easily and convieniantly updated.
http://dcresource.com/reviews/cameraList.php
there probably is a tool that i can use to enter the detail fields first.
then it spits out something like that.

It's not that difficult and I have built sites that do what you are trying to do. That being said, no one here is going to write the code for you. We will direct you and help you when you have problems learning, but this is a forum for people to learn not for the knowledgeable members to write code for anyone who asks. If you want someone to write the code for you then you will have to post in the marketplace and offer to pay a fee for someone to complete the job.

That being said - to create the website you are describing I would suggest learning php and mysql. Mysql is not that difficult to learn if you know how to write formulas in a spreadsheet like excel the old fashioned way (without using the handy dandy tool bar buttons). PHP is also not that difficult to learn. There are many resources and tutorials sited in the sticky threads through WT.

When you have a specific question on code you are trying to perfect we will be happy to assist you.
