My client has a linux hosting account via godaddy. I've created a page and could not figure out why a simple link to open a word .doc would result in a page not found.

GoDaddy has advised that linux does not recognize .doc and I have to add a .htaccess file to the root folder to make this link work but I'm no coder.

They gave a bit of info so I'm asking for help - what is wrong with the following "code" to be saved as .htaccess

AddType application/word doc

thanks much for your assistance.

I'd be more inclined to look at the spelling and case of the file name bfore looking at MIME types. Linux servers are case sensitive so Word.doc is NOT the same as word.doc

AddType application/x-word doc doesn't work - do I need to make a reference in the actual html file to this .htaccess?

SUCCESS!!!!! AddType application/msword doc IS the correct code in .htaccess file to have a linux hosted website open .doc word documents!

I had read on one site to use notepad only and then another that said only wordpad would work. Wordpad is the winner!

This is a big deal for someone who is not a geek to accomplish! Thanks for your help chrishirst
