I dont even know if this is the right spot for this. ha

How would you make a site that detects when you're on a cell phone and switches to a much simpler site.

Just use a redirect to the mobile version of the site.

HTML Code:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="path_to_file" media="handheld"/>
or the @media rules

Would I just make the simplified site, upload it, then put that code into my exsisting page now?

depends on whether you use CSS or a redirect.

Redirect may be easiest.

Don't you go believing that

You need to detect the UserAgent string of every mobile browser/mobile device and test it serverside then redirect if it matches.

And keep the list updated as new divices are introduced.

I think so. Unless there is a 100%, cast iron, gold plated reason to do so.

Anything I've done recently (3 or 4 years) has used all relative values for the CSS and we've looked at the sites using all kinds of phones, PDAs, notebooks, netbooks, tablets etc etc and not seen any issues that needed specific targeting.
