What can you tell me about RSS and RSS feed? Here is what I understand about it. It is an XML representation of a web site. It is basically XML data.

I think a web browser can be configured to display the RSS in a manner such that a visitor to your web site can understand it contents.

Am I right?

Are there desktop applications that can read RSS feed and display them?

RSS is a feed to your sites content stripped down to XML. Feed readers can easily adapt and format them in different ways which makes for a lot of flexibility and allows for a wide variety of platforms.

There are a lot of great feed readers out nowadays. FeedBurner, Google Reader, NewsGator, etc. You can also use LiveBookmarks in Firefox (or something similar in your browser) to create a bookmark that is always up to date with the latest content from your favorite RSS feeds.

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication". It is a way to easily distribute a list of headlines, update notices, and sometimes content to a wide number of people. It is used by computer programs that organize those headlines and notices for easy reading.
Producing an RSS feed is very simple and hundreds of thousands of websites now provide this feature, including major news organizations like the New York Times, the BBC, and Reuters, as well as many weblogs.

RSS is a list of your most recent posts in date order, usually with summaries of the content . It lets any subscribe know whats going on with your site, it also lets aggretators and news sites know about your items, so people can skim lots of items on the same news topic.

RSS is mainly used to show data feeds from your site into other websites like personal google home page or even display it into a feed reader. This is good for the user to allow him to keep up with your website latest news or latest data or info without need to open your website each time to check for the latest data.

there is data feed which is used with news, blog, company info,etc...
and there is media feed to be used to feed video, images and other media.

check that tutorial for more info.

RSS is just a protocol for distributing data feeds. Facebook makes real good use of it for Status Updates.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.
RSS is a standard format for syndicating content on the Internet. The content can be anything!
Users can choose which feeds they wish to subscribe to, if at any point they are unhapy with the content contained in the RSS feed they simply unsubscribe and no longer receive feed updates.
RSS feeds are usually signalled by a small orange icon or if you are using Firefox and the website has an RSS feed available an icon will appear in the URL box. You can click the icon to see the contents of the RSS feed.

Webmasters who seldom update their web sites do not need RSS! RSS is useful for web sites that are updated frequently, like:

News sites - Lists news with title, date and descriptions

Companies - Lists news and new products

Calendars - Lists upcoming events and important days

Site changes - Lists changed pages or new pages

Thousands of sites use RSS, and more people understand its usefulness every day. With RSS, information on the internet becomes easier to find, and web developers can spread their information more easily.

RSS is kind of nice because I can make the google personalized page as my browser home, so I get to see every RSS I subscribe to whenever I log on.

RSS is a technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favorite websites.
RSS works by having the website author maintain a list of notifications on their website in a standard way. This list of notifications is called an "RSS Feed".
