ok im at home. One of our members here has a wonderful tutorial on setting up a home sever. I forgot the website, but its the one that helped me.

well you will just basically need Apache, PHP 4.0 and WinMySQL

then you juts configure these in MS-DOS (command prompt) , this will take a nice 30 minutes-1 hour of your life.

after just create a folder (anywhere) labeled (whatever you want) and just create shortcuts to: Start MySQL , folder to htdocs , phpMyAdmin , http://localhost , and your favorite PHP/HTML editor.

then just right click on Taskbar, select Toolbars, click on New Toolbar. and just click on the new folder you just made.

and you got yourself a toolbar.

php , apache and winSQL seems to work fine on Windows XP, you just have to run the winsql-nt instead of the winsql.
its definitely worth to have a home server, as to you can view php files offline and stuff.

hope that helps
-Josh

with your own server you can view php files offline. as well as you can yes have your own host and a website on the net.

all you need to do is just connect to the ip address and it will display whatever is there.

so pretty much it works offline as well as online. its great

you do not need php nor mysql to run a home server. That is the decision of the Server Admin and what code he and/or his clients write. By the way, He didnt not specify if wanted to run a FTP server or Web Server.

For setting up your own home server check out www.dslwebserver.com , it's where I started over 2+ years ago. It's a great resouruce!

Check out my home server setup at www.2700.us I host 5 of my websites from that machine with no bandwidth problem.
