Why is JSP expensive?

I was going through a list of hosting service providers and all of them had one thing in common - a very expensive tag attached if you needed JSP support. Now this is one thing i cannot comprehend. Tomcat is free and that is all that is needed (i suppose) for supporting JSP on a host. Why are other scripting languages like PHP or ASP generally included in the parent package whereas JSP support has to be added on for a price more than the entire package without it (generally)?

I know only JSP, but with these hosting plans that i've seen, i think i'll have to learn PHP or ASP to handle my forms and sending news-mails. Please let me know if this is a worthy step, or its ok if i hang on with JSP?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

Tomcat is very resource intensive. Just having it installed and running on the server takes up quite a bit of resources. Therefore, hosts cannot put as many clients on one server. This is the reason for the price increase.

That and not many people use JSP, so the people who do use it are usually willing to pay for it.

Most likely a couple of months before you really get the hang of it and are able to use it fluently.

Another thing too... we use Ensim on our servers. Tomcat can only be turned on for low-security sites. Therefore, we don't even advertise the capability because we do not wish to have users roaming freely on the server

shashank,

It will be very easy for you. If you are an experienced Java developer, spend 30 minutes on php.net, buy yourself a basic book and you'll be up to speed.

I've already started reading about php and the only diffrence i found so far is the syntax. I think it'll be a couple of weeks or a bit more before I get the hang of using php functions. Thanks a lot to all who have replied.
