I have a 17 inch monitor with 600x800 screen resolution. Some top quality award winning sites still display in my browser with horizontal scrollbars. (anything over 750 pixels wide)

I'm of the opinion that this is to be avoided

So what's the lowdown? a lot of sites do this.

Any ideas?

Dan, running your screen resolution at 600 x 800 is the problem. Most site designers no longer subscribe to the belief that they should be restricted to displaying sites for users with such a low resolution. I certainly do not -- I routinely design my screens to be between 950 and 980 pixels wide -- which would certainly cause horizontal scroll bars for anyone running at such a low resolution.

I would recommend you consider increasing your resolution to come more into line with today's more prevalent usage. With a 17" monitor, you should have no viewing problems at the higher resolution (if your monitor supports it -- some very old monitors do not of course).

Totally agree. With a 17" monitor theres no real need to be using 800x600 (unless of course you have visual impairments). I recently turned a 17" monitor to 800x600 to test somethign and it was HUGE, it was pretty hard to work with. Id recommend changing to 1024x768.

Thanks for your input. My monitor is probably about 8 years old and won't run at the higher resolution. Time to get a new one.
