Does anyone know if there is a web counter that you could install in a page that will (1) be blind to visitors ie: not be visible and (2) still collect the hits info so you (the web owner) can check it

but you can try thecounter.com and bravenet.com 's pro services.

else you can add your own counters to the page by implementing a server side script.

I use http://www.sitemeter.com and absolutely love it. You can opt for it to be invisible, but it costs $6.95 a month. It really is a good deal though because then you also get a lot of extra neat statistics too.

Why wouldn't you want other people knowing how many hits the site has had? If i may ask.....

Personally... I do a lot in the way of marketing, and I don't want similar sites getting into my stats and seeing where all of my traffic comes from... then they can go apply at all the same places. It's the competitive side of me!

As well, of course, I don't want people knowing where my visitors come from for exactly the reasons andrea said....

I use Sitemeter (free) and I think it's excellent (have about 5 and have been using it for 4 or 5 years now...). The non-free version has an almost-invisible counter and everything can be password protected.

If you know a bit of PHP/MySQL I'll send you some code I have which does a lot of logging. You'll need to process the data yourself though.

One other reason Andrea and I like the invisible tracker is that when someone stole our templates (before we converted to screenshots) we could track them down and have them remove the design.

The marketing thing is a big one though. When I see someone's sitemeter and they don't have it passworded... I sure take a peek

There are some website builder company's that have a counter in the (your) editing department that only you see. For instance one that I know of because it's the one I use is www.ecomplanet.com
With ecomplanet you can build your website for FREE. But your domain would be http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/????? . The ??? would be based on what your name or name of your site is! Your can also active or create your own domain for $14.95 a year and $12.95 a month or $60.00 a year for the whole thang! But once activate from a free site to a paying site you'l have the chose to post or not post the counter!

Most good web hosts provide access to just about all the stats you should need via cpanel or websphere.
