Nice try Webmaster098! While I could certainly do with extra space on my bookshelf (any more books and I'll have to take my ornaments off, making it look a bit boring)... the cost of sending a single book even inland UK is too much for me to give books away. Having said that, have you seen my tip on books in the Tip Forum? Might be worth something to you, particularly if you have your own site or are a respected reviewer at another site.

dk01, I don't know if you've actually tried doing anything in PHP (I had a go at making a book price comparision script, and got quite far with it actually) - but it didn't grow on me, it reminded me too much of Perl but was too "different" for me to pick it up easily. I think I prefer ASP because it is just so easy to use and it lets me concentrate on the actual content of the site.

There was one thing that hit me after reading your post tho. I wouldn't say that JavaScript is safer than a server side language... it can expose some serious flaws in the server configuration in the right conditions, particularly if you trust input from scripts enough to "spit out" user input without checking it.

Hi,

I was just wondering...how did you guys test out your PHP, Perl, and ASP scripts? Did you upload it to your host, or did you convert your computer into a server in order to install PHP, ASP, etc.? I used to upload it to my host, but I got a bit annoyed as it did take a while to upload. However, the biggest problem was that I couldn't find a way to eliminate the FTP "timeout", which forced me to login again every time I wanted to upload a script. I'm in the process of converting my other computer into a server to test my scripts locally, and Apache, PHP, and MySQL have already been installed, but somehow, PHP doesn't seem to be working anymore (it worked the first time I tried it, but the second time, it no longer worked, even though Apache was turned on). Could anyone help with either of my questions (the FTP timeout or the problem with PHP)? Thanks!
