Accept/Decline Terms and Conditions Script

Hello-

I am looking for a script that will force my members to scroll through the T&C before they can agree/decline.

The way the site currently sets up is there is a box saying I accept Terms and Condition. Then, a link where they can actually view the T&C. Our legal team says this will not get the job done.

I will also pay a small amount for anyone who knows what I am talking about, and is willing to install on my website. Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from someone!

Thanks,

Ashley

You don't need to pay anyone. And no offense, but your legal team are a bunch of idiots. (Much like most lawyers...just ask the BS child support lawyer-***-collection agent from California that I mentally destroyed once. )

I'll save you a whole bunch of money right here, right now.

Add this to your form somewhere:

<textarea>
Terms and conditions listed here...people can scroll and read that stuff.
</textarea>
(checkbox that is UNCHECKED...that's the key). I hereby accept the terms and conditions of this site, blah blah blah, yadda yadda.

The T&C are right there on the page, and the user MUST click the checkbox before they continue (this comes at the server-side form processing end.)

If you know any server-side scripting language, that will take you about 5 minutes.

Actually, no they aren't. They're speaking in terms of affectiveness, not whether it will 'work' or not.

People will just scroll through TC. They will simply tick the box and be done with it.

You will require client-side scripting to see when they have scrolled to the bottom as it requires an event to be triggered.

No server side is required unless you want to make sure that the client side checking hasn't failed.

It is quicker to use Javascript (not neccessarily better).

As reinforcement, people won't tend to look at the TC, even if they are forced to (they will close or simply scroll, check and accept).

You're right, they will.

And if you put in the Javascript you're talking about, then people will just scroll through THAT without reading it and be done with it. All you've served to do is make it harder for them.

People who want to read that stuff will. Those who don't...well, it was right there in front of them, and that's their problem.

The lawyers are just making pointless busy work to justify their existence in this case. Yes, it would be better if more people read it but there really isn't anything you can do save for putting the T&C right into the page itself and putting the "I Accept" button below it, which looks like crap. And almost no one reads that stuff anyway.

So hey, force 'em to check the box, if they read it, great, if not, they checked the box so it's their problem.

I dont think anyone reads T&C's. I use the method above too however my continue button is disabled untill they click agree. This way no matter if they read it or not they have agreed to it and your covered.

What about placing the TC in an overflow div with a checkbox at the bottom of the scrolled content?

Hey everyone thanks for the responses! I have many individual say it is a waste of time, and yes I agree that most will not even read the terms and conditions. However, from a legal perspective I will take any and all steps to cover my company's back side, and to protect my members.

If a perspective member scrolls through and does not read the T&C it is on them. But if something happens to them because they met someone through my site that same person will come after my company. Now forcing them to accept or decline may not hold up in the court of law, but atleast I know I did everything possible to make sure that individual read the T&C and Online Dating tips.

Thanks!
