I am a total newbie to actionscript. Though I have read some books on it already and I now have some very basic knowledge of how it works in general, but I have one question. In all samples developers name the layer with code itself as 'actions'. Why? Is it a reserved word in AS or it is just a naming convention for other developers to understand?

Just convention. If I remember correctly it's the default offered by the Flash IDE.
