I'm not sure about the issues with locking yourself out and I hope you get back in.

Here's a comprehensive guide to .htaccess I found. I haven't read through it myself, but it seems to cover what you're looking for.

I hope it helps.

Hi vangogh,

I mailed my host and I am now back on-line. Now I am totally unsure if it was my fault or they were down...sigh...

They did'nt answer the mail. They do this. You ask a query then they make it right without imforming me..Your left waiting for the return mail....ignorant!

Thanks for you link, htaccess is something I need to learn more about.

Glad to help Sara. Does that happen often with your host? It doesn't sound like they have the best customer service. There are certainly other hosts out there too.

Since you want to brush up more on .htaccess here's an article about writing 301 redirects with .htacces. I'm not sure it will have anything new that the first link has, and it won't cover as much, but sometimes it helps seeing the same thing from a few points of view.

Hi vangogh,

I have been with my host since I first started out with my first web page -- hard to make the change... I usually wonder will it be better or worse. at least one or two of their advisors are pretty good to me.

I got a mail from one of them late last night to say he would have a look, then he came back to me to say he needs to pass my query higher up, nothing back this morning. One query is my domain in htaccess is'nt correct. This year I wanted a new one and decided then changed my mind before host bought it but in htaccess its still the one I told them I did'nt want. Yesterday I tried to change it, that may be why the site went down but till I hear from the 'higher up' I don't know.

I can't see how blocking web reaper can bring a site down. Web reaper is just a bot that runs through your site picking up images and your text files. Users then view your site off-line. I call it theft.

I have two sites and one was fine with the block, and the other went down where I changed the domain name in htaccess.

Have to say host and I had an argument when PHP5 came out and not the same for him since...lmaooooo He banned me from his support forums for blasting his methods after the change over after that episode a lot left, but thanked me for getting them back on-line again.

Thanks again for your link vangogh!

Have a nice day.

Sounds like an interesting relationship with your host. I can understand it being hard to change when you've been with someone so long, but I wonder if you'll get to a point where you get tired of the lack of support. Only you can know the answer to that.

Enjoy the day yourself.
