When I type text into some text boxes and submit the form, IE pops up with 'Do you want Windows to remember what you have typed...etc'. An example of this type of text box is a login page.

However, when I type text into, say, Google search and submit the form, IE does not pop up with a message. How are the text boxes different?

Is it just because a login page has a password field?

Thanks,

Yes, it's because it's a login field. Internet Explorer recognises it somehow (I'm not sure on the details, but I assume it recognises text boxes called username, user etc. combined with ones called pass, password etc.).

For this sort of form it stores a username/password pair for you. If you use Google (for example) it just uses standard autocomplete, and remembers what you typed automatically so if you type it again it should suggest it.
