Hey guys ,
I'm trying to set up a database for the site i work for, but i've never encountered databases before on a website.
best if you view this page so you know what i'm talking about.
i want the drop down menus to pull up specific pieces of kit from a database. so that the user can select their destination, holiday type, and season, and it will generate them the right kit. for example, if they chose hiking, then "hiking boots, thick socks etc." would come up when they clicked submit.
my problem...i have no idea how to do this. anyone with any knowledge / advice / who fancies having a go, is very welcome to. i can provide the necessary information. thankyou!!

I would imagine this could be done with a CGI or PHP script. Check at http://www.hotscripts.com/ for some scripts that might fit the bill. Some are free.

Also you can do a search for PHP scripts or CGI scripts. Google.com is really good for that.

Good luck to you.

yeah, i've been through hotscripts a little already. i'm working on some mates of mine that i know are good with this sorta thing, maybe i'll manage to get one of them interested enough to help me out.
i have very little knowledge of php, cgi yeah, to use, but not to code. i'm not really sure where to start looking! i don't know how to relate the drop down menu to the options, using DW, otherwise i'd have a go myself, get some tutorials or something.
any ideas where to start?

I would start by seeing if a script already exists that will do what you need.

Learning how to create the script yourself would take time. Finding a friend who could do it might work.

Short of those options you could always hire someone proficient in CGI/PHP to create the desired scripts for you.

I wish I could help more but that is really all I can think of to do.

Hmm I don't really think there is an average but I could have sworn I put my birthdate and year in my profile...

*shrug* I still sometimes forget and say 29 but I am actually 30 and a bit of a late bloomer to the internet. I have only been online now about 5 years and I didn't waste a second. I immediately got right into graphics and website design...

Actually I don't feel any different than I did at 23...

But when I look around me things are very different from where I was then and my perceptions/attitudes have changed...

I wasn't embarassed in the least.

thats good, as was once famously featured on a not-so-famous advert, "act your shoe size, not your age." thus meaning i am in fact 9 1/2, and will remain at about this age for the rest of my life
i still don't know how it feels to be 23, so i can't really comment on that.
are there no freelancers around?? check out my post in the freelancers section for some great business boosting oppertunities

Well if no freelancers turn up here you can always try a search for them. I would look for cgi/perl or PHP programmers.

Trust me, 23 will be upon you before you know it. Then 25 and then it will sink in, you only have 5 more years until you are 30...

It happened to me that way...

meh, i'll live forever! i decided a while ago, i'm gonna live forever. seemed like a sensible plan. hey, i'm almost over half way through my teenage years :P (*begins to panic*), ah well, i'll get over it.
i think maybe some freelancers will glance over here. it should be a simple enough project, anyone that can pull it off will get the free advertising, so it really depends on whether just someone with the basic skills has a look. if they do, then they'll get it. first one to lemme have it, gets the advertising

Hmm, maybe we should post a poll on how old the members are. But we would have to use ranges since there can be a max of 10 selections.

I'm 8 1/2. I'm 8 in °C! Go figure......

That script doesn't sound like too hard to develop. I might be able to do it for you if you wanted it done in PHP.

Just a couple of questions, though:
1. Is the invertory of stuff to take built up of one selection in each box, e.g.:
* If I select hiking it tells me to take hiking boots
* If I select Polar it tells me to take warm clothes
* If I select Spring.....
or are there 64 different combinations which are being taken?

2. Is that the full list of options or are there more to come?

3. Do you especially want a Database or would a simple script do? (I can do either, so its up to you).

the idea was to have the 64 different combinations.

we really wanted a generated page to appear with a kit list based on what the person had selected, and then each item on the kit list to link to the appropriate sales page for purchasing.
therefore, if spring, polar, hiking was selected, then there would be a list of all things needed for hiking, polar and spring would appear on a page in a list, all linked to the sales pages.

there are most probably more options to come. that is a test page that i put up. my boss will need to review it and add / subtract options to make it official.

a simple script would be great! anything that does the job without me having to sit here and create all 64 different pages for every possible combination, and then work out how to link the options to the right page in the right order :P

do you have an email address that i can contact you at as i believe further correspondance will be in order before anything can be settled upon?
