When I go to sub.mydomain.com it does not automatically go to sub.mydomain.com/index.html. It just says "403 forbidden". However if I type the filename, it works fine.

Do I need to add something to my htaccess in the subdomain folder or in the main domain's directory, or is it something else?

Seems like it is not defaulting to index.html for root. Are you on a windows server?

Never mind, I fixed it. It was a problem with the htaccess file from the directory above it.
