I'm thinking he was getting at was the options you have available to you are limited by the capabilities of your server; for instance, are you hosted on linux or windows? Do you have access to mysql databases or some other database or maybe you don't have any database access? Does your hosting provider allow you to run php scripts, cgi script, asp, etc? Can you create password protected directories on your account, or will you have to use cookies to restrict users?
Knowing at least a couple of these things could significantly help in giving suggestions.
In any case - you can search for "free membership script" or something related in search engines to find a script to suit your needs.
Something that came to mind is locked area ( http://www.locked-area.com/Products/LA/) - I used the lite version a few years ago & it seemed to serve it's purpose. It's free, and at the time it only required a link back to use it - I don't know if the terms have changed.
You can also hire a programmer to set you up a membership area - a simple one probably could be coded for you for $50-$100, set to your specifications, provided it was fairly simple. |
