I am trying to figure out how site like ebaums and other media sites present their content. Is it an automatic update or what, they all seem to be in the same format with a thumb nail for movies followed by a description and rating, and I don't think someone is actually making those thumbs every day.. are they?

Anyone know a really well organized way to showcase media?

Thanks a lot

My guess is they use some kind of content management system. New videos are added to a database though an admin side of the site or maybe through users uploading them. A title, description, etc is added and the page is coded and programmed to grab the info from the database and present them in the order of newest to oldest.

Someone could be making all the thumbnails manually to add them of course. There are sites that do that. It the site isn't updated all tat often it's not too hard, but I'm pretty sure they're using some kind of CMS.

CMS's aren't necessarily expensive, especially if you find one that does what you want out of the box. This site looks like youtube, btw. Even wordpress ( a blog software that can be used as CMS) has youtube plugins and it's a 5 minute install.

On a side note, that is a terrible site! There are nazi symbols and racial references on the first link I clicked that sound like they are from the 1950's - 1960's. Is this a place you frequent?

One bad thing about the web, it gives even the most stupid people a voice.

I didn't see any racial references on the opening page of eBaum's World either, but if they were there it certainly wouldn't surprise me. They're not exactly known for keeping it PG-13 or friendlier there.

Having said that, the other people are right, highanddry: a content management system doesn't have to be something you buy, it can be something you make. Mind you, if you don't have the skill to make it (or at least manipulate a free one to do what you want), you're out of luck.

Jacob, There are plenty of free open source content management systems also. Drupal and Joomla are two that come right to mind. WordPress is an example of a specialized content management system that's also free and open source.

You may not find one that does exactly what you want it to do, but part of the idea behind open source is that anyone can develop new additions to the core program. WordPress runs a large part of my site and I've yet to have to develop anything completely custom for it. Within an hour at most I can usually find a plugin that already does what I want or comes close enough that I just need to tweak it a little.

Should I reinvent the wheel too? Actually I'm with you on getting in there. Some plugins do exactly what I need, but others I'll use a starting point and make some changes to.

Most are free Take a look at Seedor (http://www.seedor.com/), it's free and gets the job done. If that does not fit your needs, try a search on yahoo or ask (Because google sucks when it comes to free stuff) for 'Free, PHP, Game script'.
