ICANN controls what extentions you can use. It's the only thing stopping pornographic websites from having extentions such as .*** and .xxx

Besides, .com is the most popular anyway. More profit potential

The reason I'm asking this is because new extensions are popping up such as .tk, now I don't know if this is somehow done with ICANN but all I do know is that it looks to be possible, besides I have a few extensions in mind that in time can become just as popular as .com do to the demographic I'm choosing..

Well, I can say to get a new domain extension approved, you must show a reason. It costs alot of money, and also, you must show that you'll be able to manage it. It's no easy task to get a new extension added. That's why not many new ones come up, since the ccTLDs came out. As for *.xxx, that's one in the new batch that's possibly going to be approved.

I think ICANN will not allow you to create new TLD. Normally TLDs are given to countries (but not to persons or companies). There are some TLD that was created when Internet was american military network (ARPA-NET) - .mil, .edu, .org, .com, .net. Some TLDs was created one or two years ago: .info, .biz, .name.

Generally such domains as .to, .it, .at, by belong to their countries (Tongo, Italy, Austria, Belarus). I think it is possible to register a local company in the country whos domain you want to access and register domains locally.

As I heared, there are some TLDs that was created and they do not have owners: .firm, .store, .web, .arts, .rec, .nom

We can write all scripts you need to maintain your registrar site (including reports and statistics generation).

Don't forget...there are alot more...here's a list of all gTLD's, sTLD's, and ccTLD's. http://www.alldomains.com/alltlds.html

I can't find the article, but .xxx, .cat and a few others have been proposed.
