I think its a good move. I doubt that they will explicitly revert back to XP, but considering there are so many people out there still using, or refusing to migrate from xp, a more xp-like vista might be a better transition to windows 7. I would consider using vista if it were more xp-like since there are some advantages in vista over xp, like dx10.

Personally, I'm very positive on windows/microsoft, I can't stand it when people constantly bad-mouth windows as they use it.

That should read "as they are forced to used it because of closed formats".

Vista Home Premium came on my new laptop. Out of the box it is an annoying, aggravating thing. It took me several days to ferret out and tweak all the things MS has done to dumb down the OS and annoy the sh#*# out of people. There are users who need that User Access Control nonsense to keep them from doing something completely stupid. Then you have the techies, like me, who don't need and are annoyed by that intrusive garbage - let me run MY system MY way !

I've gotten used to Vista to a degree, there are some things I still don't like. I like to create my own directories on C:\ and put them were *I* want them. Vista really tries to hide that and tries to force you to put everything in the "my documents" area, which I despise and will NOT use for my own reasons. Eventually I'll find the registry hack that stops Windows Explorer from going directly to my profile and go to the C:\ drive instead, just like my XP does.

Whats highly aggravating is they've rearranged and moved SO much of the things that have been in the same places since Win2K. Why can't they just leave stuff alone ?? !!

My desktop systems will NOT be upgraded to Vista from XP any time soon for a number of reasons, not the least of which is Vista's compatibility problems with software that I use.

This is long overdue. Like NullPointer, I'm cool with MS and a lot of their products and services have gotten me to where I am today.

Having said that, I think Vista is a complete piece of crap and not one of their better moves. If they're going to revert at least some features back to XP (as Diane noted, User Account Control), I'll be a lot happier and I'll be the first one to patch my laptop (which also came with Home Premium.)

When they're done that, they can deal with the issues in Office 2007 (.docx, .xlsx, etc.) It's actually a lot better than its predecessors overall, once you get used to it. The problem is the new extension.

I remember when that was in beta there were pictures all over image hosting sites "Google images", "Photobucket" and other sites.
It was on the news they reffered to it as CODENAME LONGHORN which is the beta version of vista was being pirated on the internet before it came out for about 2 years.

They sure take a lot of time to release software don't they I wonder how good it is.

I am currently using Vista Ultimate which honestly is the only version of Vista you should use. it seems it IS pointless to upgrade from XP unless you get ultimate.

Yes the UAC is a pain in the backside, i have disabled it and i agree with LNR I want to run it my way and im perfectly happy, if i play and muck it its my bad.. ill format and reinstall its how i work.

the only real tweaks i done is the uac,

What other tweaks did you do LNR?

Btw im very happy with vista
