Get a good antivirus software and using some other tools if allowed you can trace the intruders back. Good luck.

WOW - what a thread - I have read it three times now and my head hurts..... I think I had better go and check the firewall on my wifes computer - and the password on the router and my daughters never ending use of social networking sites and always clicking on anything that included the word 'Free'.....

Firewalls make you feel safer than you are. Good hackers come in through dos, telnet and other methods that are below the normal Windows OS.
Having understood that you need to password SECURELY any files that contain sensitive information.
Then just hope that if a good hacker does get you, he doesn't delete your files out of pure malice.

Wow, thanks, mannish. I didn't watch that video yet, but did read everything and that process...long story, so let's just say it confirmed suspicions I have that someone hacked into my computers, right down to the shared folder I found in the root directory that was filled with pirated software. I have that all cleaned up now and reinstalled Windows but it sure is creepy how easily this can all be done.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but would people stop emailing me asking how to hack into someone's computer. My replies offering advice to fitnfree were for her only, as she was asking for advice on how to protect herself.

Yes I did mention that I will not publish programs/frameworks that will help you gain access to another computer, but again this was aimed at fitnfree, purely so she can learn ways on how to protect herself.

If you do email me asking how to gain access to your girlfriends, brothers, school, etc machines, I'm not going to show you and I'm likely to turn round and tell you to go away. Why:

1. If you can't use google, then you are going to have difficultly understand the concepts.
2. If your asking how, then you are more likely to get caught because are probably too stupid to cover your tracks.
3. Now this is a killer that people forget. Gaining access to someone else's machine without their permission is ILLEGAL. So by gaining access to even your girlfriends machine, you are breaking the law. Period.

I could rant on for ages about why I'm not going to offer my knowledge to anyone, so please stop emailing me.

the best way to make your files safe is for physical backup. nothing beats it as once you have your computer on, anything ca go wrong. But if you really want to get secured. here is my take on a great additional hack prevention. you can use peerguardian. the software can block all traffic from known sites that may attack your computer, also, this can be used to select traffic specific addresses to be blocked or opened.

throw in some complete AV components and you are armed to the teeth. good luck.

I don't find windows firewall to compromise any external firewall and I wouldn't turn it off. If you use Nod32 and keep it updated and run scans you should be golden
