ok, i was just interested and wanted to work out how much of my capped upp/download amount internet radio was using so i wanted to post here to check that my counting was right

so its 128kbs = 128kilobits per second, so devide by 8 = 16kB/s, that is 16kiloBytes per second?

so 16kB/s times 3600 to make 1 hour = 57600kB/h = 57,6MB per hour...? (i devided by 1000 instead of 1024 just for easyness...)

so is that about right? it seems like a lot actually if ive got a 24gB per month cap.

Are you talking about a 24 gig limit imposed by your web host, or by your ISP? Maybe it's just that I'm getting sick, but I couldn't really tell for sure.

Is 128 k the mp3 encoding quality? If so, that's before the data is compressed, so it should be a lot smaller in the end. But the math looks right to me. Except that 57,600 KB is 56.25 megs; your host may or may not take that into account. The reason we still use kilobits per second is because it sounds faster; hard drive makers use 1000 instead of 1024 because it sounds like the drive has more capacity. On that note, it would only make sense for other industries to count in a way that suits them...

If your worried about the different numbers of bits, bytes, conversions, etc., you can also use this calculator:
http://www.beesky.com/newsite/bit_byte.htm

And these conversion charts (which helps to differentiate between kilobits, kibibits, etc.):
