okay this is really bugging me, im doing a site and going to a meeting tomorrow and i want to get the site all set up on a laptop so i nicked my brothers have installed server software etc got the database imported and then tried to ftp all the files to the laptop from my live server...

but it wont frickin work!!? and i have no clue why, i have tried with multiple software, Filezilla, SmartFTP and with internet explorer. but non of them connect, i have the internet and have now tried if with wired connection incase it was that the wireless signal wasnt strong enough, but nothing i just get

i know the pword etc is fine, because i can login using any ftp soft i please with exactly the same info, its on the same network so i jsut dont get it, the software has full access with the firewall etc, and it should jsut work!!

any ideas its XP Media centre if that helps

please ideas it will just be a pain if i have to transfer between computers etc... thanks.

If you're on the same network, why do you need FTP?
Can't you just drag/drop the files thru "My Network Places"?

because

lol, mainly because it has differance, that is what i have ended up doing but i still need FTP access so i do still need a solution to this.

Well then,
I would have to assume that there is something in your firewall settings that you're missing.

Have you disabled all firewalls temporarily to see if that's the problem?
Also some antivirus apps could block some traffic. Disable that as well.

Is your FTP client using passive FTP (PASV)?
because the port negotiation for PASV appears like port scanning to a firewall and it will probably have blocked your IP

a couple weeks ago on my system.

Every time lame Windows does a SP2 update on my machine it reverts the browser back to passive FTP so I have to go in and turn it off. But this shouldnt affect random FTP programs because they are stand alone. But if the server is set for it I guess its possible thats the problem.

So, are the computers on the same network? If not, then you're probably leaving the network and then coming back in through the firewall. Make sure that the network router is forwarding the FTP port to the server computer, and that the firewall on the client computer is not blocking the FTP port either.

ok its very simple, i have wireless router, works fine on my PC (wired) and it was the laptop (using both wireless and wired) it dont connect, so its nothing to do with network or connection and the server is external hosting and works fine for me, so what could be wrong?

Just to make sure I'm understanding everything here:
You're trying to connect your laptop to the remote server?
And there's no problems connecting your desktop PC to the remote server?

And you're trying to move info like this?:
Data on desktop > upload data to remote server > then download data from server to laptop

Also, you're completely sure you have all the basic info correct?:

You established an FTP site on the laptop?
The domain is entered for the host name?
You're using "normal" login type?
Username and password info is correct?

well ignore transfering from desktop bit basically

i cant use FTP AT ALL on the laptop which is on the same network as my desktop, which works fine.

so some setting is causing FTP to mess up, and it isnt firewall because i would have had a message saying PROGRAM is trying to use blah and i have the ftp ports open etc...

Hmmmmmmmm, there's only two things I can think of that you could try ATM:

Make sure that Ports 20 and 21 are allowed on your remote server, (for firewalls pertaining to hardware and software).

If so, then also check to see if "client for microsoft network" is checkmarked under your card properties that is connecting your laptop to the internet, if so, make sure you uncheck it.
