PC slowed down...possible causes?

I just tried to install the PHP package the other night. I didnt get all the way thru it but I did go in and modify the evironment variable settings by adding "C:PHP" to the end like they said to do. Ever since I put the PHP files on my computer its been running dog slow. If I right click on anything it takes literally 3-4 seconds for the sub menu to pop up. But if I right click on a picture in a browser the menu comes up immediately. One other thing worth mentioning is AVG antivirus found a shell32.dll problem and it corrects it every time I boot up. Not sure if thats worth writing home about or not. I havent done anything I dont do every day on this machine, just checking mail and some web design stuff. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Could simpley be one of the programs already insalled has conflicts with the new software you insalled. Try just uninstalling the last program that seems to have caused the problem. If that works reinstall it but make sure everthing, all drivers and programs is upto date and see how that goes.

Could be coinsidence it happened at the sametime and you have got some sort of malware on your PC. Do a scan and if you dont drust your security then do an online scan with Panda online free scan its really good and does not tell you that you have problems when you dont like most free online scanners.

Could be you need to have a clearout of old temp files and defag, just genral maintainance. CCleaner is a good free program for doing this if you dont already us it.

I prefer not to use CCleaner. It messes with registry files and it hosed a relatives machine because of it. I guess I should try a defrag and clean out the system. I run spybot and adaware and they found the usual junk and it removed it. We'll see if cleaning it further helps.

I've never had any problems with ccleaner. I've been using it for years on my machine and clients' and haven't had any issues. Within ccleaner you can deselect the registry wipes if you want.

I use CCleaner as well and recommend all clients to use it. This is the first time I have ever even heard of anyone having a problem with it. Spybot Search and Destroy is much more likely to pull out something.
Dumping that excess weight on your computer is vital to it.
Here is an online scanner that will clean up the junk along with adware and spyware. Windows Live One Care
However....this is completely online and I always recommend cleaning while offline!

Did you check your task manager?
Hold down the "control" "alt" and "delete" key at the same time. Check your applications to make sure something isn't running that does not need to be. Check your running processes as well. The shell32.dll is not a problem AVG is just telling you it changed.

Check for the presence of any adware, malware or spyware in your computer. Also use a good antivirus (avast is free and good) and regularly scan your computer. This will possibly help to increase speed. Uninstall any program that is rarely used.

This is a bit late but after 2 consecutive defrags and uninstalling several unused programs the speed almost fully recovered. So thanks for the help everyone.

The guy has already said he has sorted it why would you still be trying to guess/advise what the problem is?
