Well me and my dad are planning on getting a wireless router. But he does not know if they are used for hooking up 2 computers on it without getting another one. If a wireless router is not for hooking up 2 computers to it with internet please tell me what is.

Thank you,

Dominic

Your dad is right. The point of a router is to share a network connection (in this case, the Internet) between two or more computers.

VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure you secure your router with a password that you guys will be able to remember, but most people won't be able to guess.

The router is only step two of three, your going to need a dsl/cable modem to connect the router to.

If there is a store like Microcenter nearby, it might be good to talk to them about it too.

I have a wireless router and yes it can have more than 1 computer hooked up to the internet. But thats not the only thing that you need. You will need to get a dsl/cable modem from your interent provider. Another thing you will need is internet cables which can be plugged into the computer from the router. Lets say you have a laptop that contains wireless internet, that laptop will also have interent. As mentioned above you would want to secure your internet with a password that is kept secret so that no outsider can use your internet.

Or lock the router down so that it'll only talk to specific MAC addresses. I find that easier to administer ... when a friend comes over, instead of having to dig up the key or generate a new one, I add them to the white-list.

You gotta get a hold of one of the newer Belkin routers, Forrest. I like them because they allow for an Internet-only router key (which you could easily stick to the side of your router with an Avery label...as long as you didn't have your router near a window and you didn't have people that you didn't trust being able to physically see the thing), and then a full network router key.

I've never been big on the MAC address route simply because one of the wired ports on my router is dedicated to my "open tower" PC, which is either my old crusty Win98 PC or whatever PC I'm fixing at the time. And when it comes to wireless, I'm the only one who uses it anyway, so I don't feel the need to give out the key for it.

But that's just me.
