No. Something is very, very wrong.

Can you be any more specific? Is it only happening when you try to browse files on a network share, or locally? That's when you're just moving around between directories and looking at files ... not necessarily when you open them? Finally: what happens if you leave the explorer app that's not responding? Like go enjoy lunch and then come back. Does it come back to life, or is that all she wrote?

Here are a few places you can check for info as well. I'm assuming no knowledge, not because I think you're stupid but just to provide as much info as I can for you and anyone else who may be reading this (keeps everyone on the same page):

1) Event Viewer. Do you have any Errors (they're fairly easy to spot since they all have a big white X inside of a red stop sign) in there?

Start-->Control Panel-->Administrative Tools-->Event Viewer.

2) If you hit Control-Alt-Delete and go into Task Manager, what's running there? Are there programs/processes you don't recognize?

3) MSConfig. What's running in there?

4) Your hard drive itself. Is it running loudly? Is it making any weird non-hard-drive-like grinding noises?

5) What happens when you boot your machine into safe mode (if you can)? Does the behavior persist?

6) If you go into Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features, is there stuff in there you don't recognize? If so, what?

You're bound to find at least part of the answer in one of those six things.

I had the same issue. I believe it was disease ridden (spyware, etc.). Windows explorer not working and the task bar disappearing is a huge indication of a virus.

Backup, reinstall. Or consider upgrading to Windows XP.

I also experienced that and you might want to check on the programs that you recently installed. You can also use the System Restore function but do check the last back up date.

I have a similar problem, every time I try to do something involving windows explorer it just simply fails to respond. Games work just fine but if I try to tab out of them (which was working a couple of days ago) the tab menu freezes. The only thing I have tried that worked is pressing the windows key and l to go to the lock screen then relogging back in, and I have to do it alot before I see any results.Im using Vista Home on an HP Pavilion dv6-1245dx Entertainment Notebook PC.

I did manage to get to vista's little menu where it offers to check for solutions and restart the program (it restarts explorer but doesnt check for solutions) and it said the problem was called something along the lines of Appfailb1 which yielded no results on google
