Assuming XP since you don't specify which OS you're using, some tips to get your machines to be able to "see" each other:

-Make sure both machines are in the same workgroup (Start -> settings -> Control panel -> System -> Computer Name -> click "Change" and assign both machines to a common workgroup name)

-If using a firewall, which you definitely should be, check the settings to see if your network address range is being allowed (application and router specific, but usually 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.255)

-Set the drive(s) that the data will be read from to have sharing enabled (My Computer -> right click on drive to be shared -> Sharing and Security)

At this point you should be able to see the sending machines drive(s) from the receiving machines in Windows Explorer Network Places.

enable file and print sharing on both.
Then select the folders you want to 'share'
Then in address bar type \\computernamethatyouwanttoaccess

Alternatively, setup ftp server on one, and client on the other. try filezilla perhaps : http://filezilla-project.org/
