I think it's impressive that they could make a laptop as thin as they did, though there are some things you'd usually find in a laptop, such as an optical drive, that aren't there.

If you're someone who wants a laptop mainly because you need to move it often and carry it around with you then a macbook air might be an attractive solution. If you're primary use for a laptop is a desktop replacement then you might prefer to have an optical drive.

I'd say there's a market for the air. In the end how well it actually performs will determine its success.

Went to my local apple shop the other day looking to buy one, tried it out but it doesn't meet a lot of basic requirements which you would expect. Left with a macbook pro

Even if you look at the commerical when they push the lid down to close it you can see it kind of warp. I would be constantly afraid i was going to snap the **** thing. Although its definetly cool and amazing piece of engineering. I have alot of respect for it especially as my laptop is a beast and is heavy as hell.

An excellent machine, but for those that are not that tech oriented the "non-user-replaceable battery" issue is a big negative.

I haven't had a proper look at the air model but just like anything else it has a nice list of pros and cons. For starters it is light, most likely it doe have good battery life, contains a lot of features and, a its a mac above all. But the omission of an optical drive and the fact that it is a mac will more than likely keep it to mac enthusiasts to a degree. I like someone else to make a laptop that thin and see how it would do in comparison

While I am not fixing to spend that much money on a computer with those specs anytime soon(I require much higher specs for doing my digital art and design work anyway.) I do think that the MacBook Air is an amazing leap in technology. What fascinates me the most about it is the new solid state hard drive. I think it will be very interesting to see what part SSDs play in the future of mobile computing as they come down in price. I love the idea of a more reliable hard drive that doesn't overheat or break if it is dropped.

I guess that the only thing that really gets on my nerves about the new MacBook Airs is that it's impossible to change the battery. While I have had a MacBook Pro for about a year now and haven't yet used my spare battery very much, I still like the assurance of having the option of using it if I ever need to. The lack of the optical drive doesn't bother me very much. As wifi and dsl becomes available in more and more locations, CDs and DVDs will eventually become obsolete.

All in all, my opinion is cheers to Apple for creating a new and innovative laptop that is made for the modern lifestyle!!!

I think the solid state drives are impressive too. I think we're just waiting for costs to come down before they're more common. I hear you about the optical drive. It's not like I really use the one on my laptop all the time, but it's nice to know it's there for now.

I need more spec too, but I can see how if you're primary use for a laptop has to do with the portability the Air would make a good option.

I take it you're happy with your MacBook Pro. I'm thinking one might become my next laptop.

Sometimes what looks good on the outside is not so good on the inside. Like junk food

The Air looks really sleek. I'm surprised they even squeezed in a single USB port. That's useful for most people to say the least. If you really want something thing, read below.

You can go with a Sony laptop. I use a Sony for personal use which I purchased this past December. At the time, it was the top model they had (VGN-FZ290)

Specs:
Core 2 Duo 2.6GHz
4GB Memory (3rd party vendor)
7200kRPM Disk (3rd party vendor / Hitachi)
Nvidia 8400M GT with 256MB Dedicated / up to 1GB Shared
Blu-Ray Drive (amazing quality rest assured)

The Sony is extremely slim for its specs, sleek and the battery lasts about 5-6 hours in general use (wifi, typical software as Office, video streaming, etc). I'd guess by looking at it now its slightly less than an inch closed. Its thin enough for its specs and probably the thinnest for a 15.4" loaded.
