I'm using Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Both of them are for personal use, and the discs I want to burn are a variety of things. Everything from music CDs for the car to gobs and gobs and gobs of data. I'm thinking DVDs for SQL backups, et cetera. And occasionally movie video DVDs.

So what software would people recommend? I think Nero is what a lot of people use? Is there something that will be able to work against a lot of different types of data, but cost less (or even free?).

There are a lot of free cd/dvd burning apps for windows.
I used to use cd burner xp [ http://cdburnerxp.se/ ] but I have fired it for dvdburn [ http://www.mrbass.org/dvdburn/ ]some times ago.

And when I'm on linux, sometimes I use k3b [ http://k3b.plainblack.com/screenshots ], and sometimes brasero [ http://www.gnome.org/projects/brasero/ ]

I've used Nero since I was in High School. It's what is familiar to me and has never failed me.

There is a lot of free software out there. I've used a lot, but I currently use Nero for burning DVDs.

Another vote for Nero.

But here are some free alternatives:
CDBurnerXP (more here: http://lifehacker.com/software/featu...rxp-304430.php)
BurnAware (and here: http://lifehacker.com/352326/tackle-...with-burnaware)

Nero is what I use and I think it's the best for me. It comes when you purchase a writer.

Wow, everybody loves Nero!

Mine is a laptop that came with a built in DVD and CD writer combo, but no Nero preinstalled. I've downloaded the time limited trial, but it's only good through the end of the month. I'll try some of the free alternatives and see how they work out for me, then report back.

Good lord...
Even if nero came with my burner, I think I have never even installed it...
I'm wondering if there is anyone that will answer this thread saying that they don't use nero ?

For music I use Nero, but that's it. Everything else I use the XP default and drop and drag what I'm burning. I don't burn music that often anymore because everything is on my mp3 player so it all goes with me.

I use Nero too for everything it is easy and you can get it for really cheap these days. There are a few downfalls but for the price you can not beat it.

For anything with CDs or DVDs I use nero. I think the interfaces are great and easy to use, and they work every time.
