I don't believe in brands except in case of a lappy, then go for Dell, or ASUS.
I belive in getting the parts and putting them together myself or paying someone to do it, as Branded PCs areactually a waste of money.

I would go for HP, its computer is consistent and good, the rest really depends but HP's quality is extremely consistent.

Hehe, really they are just charging you so they can have their logo on your PC, you should be charging them for that.

No cult members in here? Steve Jobs would be so disappointed!
Since you're buying a desktop and not a laptop computer, the brand isn't very important. What really matters on any computer is the components inside, but with a desktop, you can open the hood and change them out if you ever feel like it.

Yep.
Don't get a Mac.
Don't get an Intel CPU, get AMD, get an ATI graphics card.
Get Transcend RAM, Seagate or Hitachi HDD, no Western Digital, it is useless.
AN ASUS motherboard and a Samusng or LiteON DVD Writer.

Onlydisadvantage is that Dell uses only Intel CPUs and I don't like Intel.

AMD is actually really nice. Their HyperTransport feature blows the socks off a front side bus!

Using an ATI graphics card over an nVidia card isn't always the best option depending on your OS of choice.
ATI has always had horrible support for Linux, but nVidia cards work fairly well (I used to run Ubuntu with Compiz on a 3.2Ghz P4 with 512MiB of RAM and a 256MiB GeForce FX 5500 graphics card without any problems).
I'm not saying nVidia is perfect, but they have definitely had less trouble supporting Linux.
My current system is a Samsung R700 Aura:
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66
2GiB DDR2 RAM
250GiB Hitachi HDD
nVidia GeForce 8400M GS
17" widescreen LCD
5-in-1 card reader
TSSTCorp (Toshiba Samsung Technologies) CD \ DVDRW
HDMI & S-VGA output
802.11b \ g WiFi
1.3MPX webcam
Anti-bacterial (silver ion) keyboard
It's a laptop, and while it's hardly the most powerful system on the market, it does what I need and hasn't given me any problems so far.

I recommend ASUS over all brands, they offer great support and I have used an ASUS for 5 years without repair, as for dell, 2 months and it needed repair, twice!

I'm guessing from your post that you're not overly knowlegeable about computer hardware, so recommending various custom configs may be a but pointless.
All of the brands you've mentioned are fine, and I've used all of them except for NEC (are they even made anymore?). Today it's more about price/performance/service than branding since an awful lot of the parts in each of those desktops are probably the same, or at least from the same manufacturers.
I'd recomend you find the 3 machines that best meet your price/performance criteria and then check out their reviews. Find the one that's got the best review and go with that.
