Does anybody have a Linux recommendation for home pc use? Computer is used mainly for web design and email.

Also, any recommendations for a html editor to use with it?

If you have no previous linux experience, then go ubuntu or they derivative (xubuntu, kubuntu...).
They are mainstream, and the more peoples using it means the easier you will find answers to your questions.

If you do have experience with linux, and you want to learn it more, go Gentoo.
It's source based (meaning that a full system install can take days, on older pc) but it's a great way to teach yourself how the system works.

And if you do know linux a bit, and don't want to go in the details, then something along Fedora or openSuse is what you want to look for.

As for an html editor, I use Scite, or vim.
If you look for something visual, you can try NVU or Quanta plus. But I never used them. Don't know if they still are alive...

Thanks tripy. I don't know Linux at all and probably don't need to. I don't manage servers. I just bought a new laptop for my wife with vista and it annoys me how MS is forcing people to use new programs and vista. A lot of the programs I use are older and Vista may require upgrades. I am using win 2k still as I have had no reason to upgrade. A lot of my programs are old ie DW 2003 etc.

I'm going to try ubuntu as that seems to make the most sense. I also have seen Bluefish recommended as a free html editor. I have Zend for php which should be compatible.

Anybody have any comments for the following types of programs for use with Linux?
  • Text editor
  • photoshop : inkscape/gimp have been recommended
  • vector graphics like illistrator
  • antivirus
  • disk imaging ie Norton Ghost

Text editor: As I said, Scite is my favorite. Light, fast and has syntax coloration for a whole lot of languages
Bitmap graphics: This let barely just The Gimp.
Vector graphics: This is the field of inskcape.
Antivirus, I know that f-prot did one. But honestly, you don't need one. The anti-virus I know that exists on linux are to be ran on mail servers (for filtering incoming mails) or on file servers (to clean up files that may arrive from a windows box).
The only 2 virus I have heard about on linux where effective only if you where using the super user account for your day job, which is strongly discouraged, and done right by ubuntu
Disk imaging: I always used a simple program called "dd" for this, but you can try partimage which purpose is to create linux or windows disk images and restore them.

Just 1 last word of advice: if you still find programms that you need to run nuder windows, I recommand you to look upon sun virtual box.
It's a os virtualiser, like vmware, but totally free that allows you to install an win2k virtual machine and use it like a regular program, but from linux.
Canbe handy if you don't find exactly what you need/want natively under linux.

Thanks again tripy. I'm going to mess around with this for a while. MS forcing customers into Vista and upgrading other programs just rubs me the wrong way. I have ubuntu installed on my backup pc. I didn't get any further than that today.

I'll come back and post what worked for me when I've had time to play with the program and all the applications I need.

I have only used Ubuntu and Gentoo. I would say for the average home user, go with Ubuntu.

as previously said, i would recommend Ubuntu. i use it myself for work, it's stable, secure, looks good, and compiz realy makes work easier with multiple desktops, expo and scale functions which let you easiely find the program you are looking for....

now for the software

Text editors: there really are a lot of them, i personally use krusaders internal editor, because it lets me edit files on the network and saving them directly, without dowloading, saving and the manualy uploading them back (krusader is totalcommander for linux). the editor colors your code (forgot the expression), it supports practicly every language. i love the way you can navigate to a file on a remote server in krusader, press F4, the editor opens, after you're done, just pres ctrl+s and F5 in your browser, and that's it

photoshop gimp is all you'll ever need for editing images, inkscape for vector graphics

antivirus don't and never will need one, the reason is that practically everything on linux is opensource, so what's the point in writing viruses if everyone can see the code and has the ability to discover and delete them. (dont get me wrong, there still are known cases of viruses on linux, about 40 per year, as oposing to windows which has about 40 000 per year)

norton ghost never used it, so cant really help u with that.

i would like to say another thing that i think is important for webdesigners, besides other not so well known browsers (like konqueror) there are firefox and opera for linux, i hear even an IE version is out somwhere (personally i hate IE :P )

to sum it up, i think ubuntu is the perfect solutiuon for webdesign, the only thing it lacks is adobe flash (don't know if that's the official title of the program used for crating flash stuff)

Then I recommend continuing to use Windows 2000, and not fighting your way up a learning curve.

For home i would recommend Ubuntu, by far, simple, usually guided, and for average tasks it works
