I have an old Stereo lying around on a shelf somewhere, not even plugged in. I'd like to put that to some good use, and hook it up to the good old computer, just to give myself some nice sound.

Considering that it's old, I really don't know if it can handle being hooked up to a computer, or rather if it has the appropriate jacks and such.

What should i be looking for?

Simply get a jack to cinch cable (jack being the walkman/mp3 players type connectors, and cinch the red/white you found at the rear of a stereo) and plug them in.

If the stereo support digital, and your sound card too, you can even go that way. The sound will be clearer then.
If you are unsure, maybe a picture of your stereo can help.

A standard 1/8" stereo jack is the best way to hook up, it's the same type as a headphone jack if you know what that looks like.

Older stereos will use 1/4" stereo or just plain speaker wires as tripy mentioned. Any of the above will work. Once you've identified what inputs the stereo takes, you just need a cable with 1/8" stereo on one end which you plug into the line out or speaker port on your computer, and whichever plug it takes on the other end for the stereo input.

Well, I don't know what to say. I didn't install this the first time, So I might need to ask my dad on how to do it. Each speaker has two little holes in the back that are covered. Each hole has a little lever thing under it. One is red, and the other is black. If you push it, the hole opens. I'm guess that's where you put whatever goes in there. To be honest, I haven't really seen anything like it : (.

Now, I have no idea how would go about in connecting the actual stereo with it's speaker, much less than hook it up to a computer.

I'm guessing that the speakers must be attached to the stereo, then i need to install the stereo itself to the computer? Let me know if I'm missing something.

I still have no clue on how to set this up!

You are correct.

You need to get some standard speaker wire, 16 gauge will do fine, and use that to hook the speakers up to the stereo. Two wires go from each speaker to the stereo, there should be holes on the stereo two with either flaps that lift up or pushbuttons to open the hole. They should be marked on the stereo L (left) R (right) and front or rear. Just match red to red and black to black.

It depends on your stereo, If your stereo has line in then you can connect your computer with your stereo... All you have to do is to look for a cable with stereo pin on one side (like headphone pin) and AV like pin on the other side (similar pin used by old tv sets to connect cd or dvd players)

to do this depends on what kind of sound card your computer has and what type of input your stereo has.

If you have RCA jacks on both then you just need one of these:

If you have RCA on one side and regular headphone line in on the other:

If they both are headphone jacks (being an old stereo then it probably does):

any of these you can find at any electronics store and even wal-mart most of the time, and they are relatively cheap too

good luck buddy
