I recently discovered I had speech recogniton/ voice recognition software on my computer. I was going to purchase it because I was curious, but then it dawned on me to go down to my start menu and type in speech recognition -- and low & behold! there it was. I've been practicing with it and it seems to work fairly well. It says the more you work with it the better your computer will be trained to understand you. I still don't have it down easy enough to replace my 2-finger typing LOL... but if I do it would be a huge convenience just to sit back and talk to my computer and let it type and open programs for me. What about you, have you ever tried speech recognition on your computer, and can share any tips?!

I think it is pretty cool because I have it on my computer too the only problem is mentioning all of the punctuation. That is the only thing that keeps me from using it.

yeah i know what you mean, but I guess even if you have to mention punctuation it can still be faster than typing.

If you have flu or cough? And your voice is different what would you do?
But that is interesting anyway. What is the price of such software and what hardware can be used also?

Don't know about how it would work if you're voice changes for some reasons. And actually I found it installed on my computer Free! Try going to your start menu and typing - speech recognition - in the search box and see if it pops up.

I remember seeing my dad get one, it didn;t last long, about a week.
I am looking to take this up.
Speech recognition software would take along time to configure, but for users like article writers i have heard stories of knocking out a top quality article in 5 minutes and making $5 - 20.
Obviously a good market for people with time dedication and good content and punctuation skills.

I've been working with this speech recognition thing more & more just training my computer to better understand me. It states the the more you train it the better and quicker it gets and I'm noticing this! The other day I read a random letter in to it at average pace - and to my surprise it was about 80% accurate. Not Bad, definitely better than a few weeks ago. Guess I'll just keep working with it because I can see the time-saving and convenience benefits already

Time for a little humour here:

I found it hard to work with. The learning part was especially challenged depending on how many "adult beverages" I had consumed.

Sure kept the cpu busy.

Yeah I know what you mean that can cause some complications!

But hey check this out... This thing is no joke. It's been getting better and better the more I train my computer. Today I read a whole article with it in MS Office Word and the thing got it about 90% accurate. Just a few mistakes and delays here & there but nothing major (no different from when someone is typing and has to go back and correct an error). I am definitely seeing an improvement! And I will say that it is much faster than typing no matter how fast you type. And it sure as heck is more convenient and less work that's for sure. Most sentences that I read showed up instantly and correctly to my surprise! I'm definitely gonna keep working with it

On the contrary, it comes with macs. Macs come with everything (they ARE superior to all other forms non carbon-based processor, after all). It's called "Speakable Items".

Sadly, and ironically, the only thing that really works properly is the command "Quit speakable items".

I find.

I found speech recognition software to be quite useless due to the fact that it has to take a sample of your voice, and if you don't sound that way every time, it doesn't work. I think you should skip that idea, but it's an idea none the less. Just thought I would share my experience with you.

Here are some tips:
· Speak with the system is ready to listen - if you start speaking sooner, part of the speech will not be captured.
· Speak in a normal tone - if you speak with a cold voice, and exaggerated voice, or with an accent, or any type of voice that does not match the voice model, the speech recognizer may incorrectly type what has been said.
· Grammar and words - if you say something outside the realm of basic grammar or a word that is not in the dictionary, then there is likely to be a mistake made.
· Background noise - when using your voice recognition system, be sure that it is quite and there are no background noises (especially the people speaking in the background).
· Start out with simple stuff - start out by dictating just a few memos, then e-mails, then bigger stuff.
· Proofread - make sure that you read over things before you send them out. Check for errors. Fixing these errors and thereby having to use your keyboard and mouse is not going to give you a typing injury!
